How Do Car Window Tinting Pros Install Films in 5 Steps?

Thinking of getting your car windows tinted? Great idea!

Here is how car window tinting professionals carry out the installation of films.

Step 1 - Wind-free, Dust-free Surroundings

On bringing your car to the tinting shop, the first thing the technician does is move your car to an indoor garage area. Emphasis on indoors, because the environment needs to be free of wind and dust. This is done to ensure that no debris finds its way between the glass and the film during installation. The absence of wind means less bubble action in the films.

Step 2 - Clean the Car Windows

The next step is to start prepping your car windows. The technician will begin cleaning the glass with a soap solution, sponge, and squeegee. Note that both sides of the glass are to be cleaned. Typically, the installer will also clean the doors, hood, and trunk.

Once done with the exterior, it is time to move to the inside of the windows. The glass is sprayed with soap water and the dirt is scraped off using a razor blade. In new cars, this step also helps get rid of the glue-like residue from the stickers.

Step 3 - Take Measurements and Cut the Film accordingly

The technician will note the dimensions of your car windows and cut out pieces of film as per the measurements. Then the cut-out is placed on the exterior of the window as the installers checks if the edges align properly, if not, adjustments are made using a blade.

A heat gun is used to shrink the film, such that it fits the contours of the glass. Heat guns used for car window tinting are designed to emit low levels of heat lest it causes damage to the car.

Step 4 - Refine the Edges on the Peel Board

The peel board is a regular glass pane, the film is laid on the glass and the corners are rounded to make sure that it doesn’t catch or start peeling off when the windows are rolled up and down. Any of the finer details are also carved out during this step.

Step 5 - Installation Time

Now that the window tinting film is sized and shaped to perfection, the tinting professional will begin the installation process. The installer will spray a soap solution on the interior window glass. This allows the film to glide into position. The release liner is peeled off and the film is applied to the window, sticky-side facing the glass. The excess solution is squeezed out from under the film using a squeegee. The squeegee also helps press down the adhesive for a firmer finish. Many also use plastic scrappers to push out bubbles, some will even reuse the heat gun to further mold the film to the shape of the glass.
